Ayurveda & Benefits

Kachnar in classical Ayurveda.

कांचनारः · ग्रन्थिहर:

Astringent, drying, cool. Long named in Ayurvedic texts as a remedy for glandular and lymphatic disorders. The bark of the Kovidar tree carries one of the most respected names in Indian materia medica.

Rasa · Guna · Virya · Vipaka

  • Rasa (taste) — kashaya (astringent), tikta (bitter)
  • Guna (quality) — laghu (light), ruksha (dry)
  • Virya (potency) — sheeta (cool)
  • Vipaka (post-digestive) — katu (pungent)
  • Effect on doshas — pacifies kapha & pitta

Classical actions

  • Granthi-hara — dissolves glandular swellings
  • Krimi-hara — anti-parasitic, anti-microbial
  • Raktapittahara — supports balanced blood and bleeding tendencies
  • Kustha-hara — used in skin disorders
  • Vrana-ropana — aids in wound healing

Kanchanara Guggulu

The most famous classical formulation containing Kovidar bark is Kanchanara Guggulu, a tablet preparation that combines Kachnar bark with guggulu resin and a panel of supportive herbs (trikatu, triphala, varuna). It has long been recommended for thyroid imbalances, cystic growths, lymphadenopathy, and obstinate skin disorders.

Parts used

  • Bark — decoctions, powders, tablets (most classical)
  • Flower buds — dried, used in formulations and as a vegetable
  • Flowers — fresh, in chutneys, pakoras, dals (Kachnar ki sabzi)
  • Leaves — occasionally in poultices

Modern research

Contemporary phytochemistry has identified flavonoids, tannins, sterols and saponins in Bauhinia variegata bark, with antioxidant, antimicrobial, hepatoprotective and anti-inflammatory activity in laboratory studies. The classical use in glandular disorders aligns with this evidence, though clinical research remains limited.
